Sound paletteBig, bold and brassy, contrasted with moments of silence for reflection. These are the sound of the Territory and Territorians. We can be loud but we can also be very, very still. Our sound palette needs to reflect this. When you think of the sounds of the Territory you need to cover all extremes. From the roar of a thunderstorm to the peace of a billabong, the Territory’s sounds are many and varied. When selecting or commissioning music, choose themes with peaks, troughs and crescendos. Music that “ambles” along with no variation in tone, volume and energy will not reflect the Territory way. Consider using natural sounds where possible to complement music – sounds such as birds singing, children laughing and waterfalls cascading. Use Indigenous music – didgeridoos, clap sticks, etc – as an accent if desired but not as the major theme. Don’t be afraid to use the power of silence. The Territory way is strong and confident enough to get by without sound at times. |
